Magnifica Reserva soleira
The Soleira aging method
In most cases, aging noble spirits (cognac, whiskey, rum and…cachaça) simply means letting the fresh distillate mature in a cask for a determined number of years. This process will change the distillate from its white original aspect, by giving a darker color and a smoother and more complex taste.
The process called Soleira is much more sophisticated, it demands much more work but gives the final product a complexity and a consistent quality over the years that no other aging method can match.
How does it work?
The Soleira (Solera in Spanish) aging process, also known as “dynamic aging process” consists in periodically moving the liquid from the casks located on one shelf to the ones located just below, until the liquid reaches the barrels located at the level of the soil, the “Soleira”.
For its Soleira, Magnifica uses two big stands, where selected American oak casks are sitting on eight levels; every 12 months (approximately) half of the cachaça from the casks in the soleira (bottom) level is bottled. Those casks are then refilled with the cachaça of the level immediately above and so on until the highest level where freshly distilled cachaça is used for refilling.
Since the bottling of Soleira is usually made every 10 to 14 months, the cachaça in the bottle has at least six years of aging but it will be mixed with cachaça that was distilled since the first year when this method was used in 2001/02, so roughly up to 20 years ago.

What are the advantages of the soleira method?
The Soleira method brings more complexity because each drop of the final liquid will have gone through various casks and each of them will have brought its own individual touch. A Soleira distillate will bring a much richer taste experience, that will please the most demanding connoisseurs.
The Soleira method also brings more uniformity to the quality of the final product, because a possible slight imperfection in a cask will be compensated by the other casks of the other levels.
Why is Magnífica’s Soleira unique?
The vast majority of Soleras for Sherry, Port, whiskey or rum have between three and five levels, but Magnifica‘s Soleira has eight! We do not know of any other Solera anywhere in the world with so many layers which will guarantee a unique quality and complexity.
Magnifica was the pioneer in Brazil in using the Soleira aging method since 2001/02. Still today there is only one other brand that uses the same method, albeit with a much smaller stand.
